The Cult of Comme

 

Style.com just put out a great feature The Cult of Comme, which showcases 12 of the line's most devoted fan's with some of their favorite pieces.  It is fascinating to see the various styles and looks worn by her fans, from the more subtle to the very avant garde.  A friend of mine was even featured with some of her amazing pieces that have a permanent home in her closet!

 

Rei Kawakubo is truly a genius and one of my favorite designers, and I was fortunate enough to meet her years ago.  I have such appreciation for her business acumen, creativity and willingness to not conform or follow trends.

Bones Brigade

If you were a kid like me growing up in the mid 80’s you had to be familiar with the Bones Brigade skate crew of Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Rodney Mullen and Tony Hawk as well as Powell Peralta founders George Powell and Stacy Peralta. 

 

Together they made skateboarding what it is today, from the style of riding to the tricks, and even down to fashion.  This Spring Summer season 3.1 Phillip Lim and Adam Kimmel took inspiration from skating street wear and below are some of the pieces that can easily be worked in to your wardrobe even if your old board hasn’t seen the light of day in some years

 

      

     

 

Watching the Bones Brigade crew as a kid made me ditch my BMX bike for my boards and if I went somewhere, a board was always with me.  I wanted to ride like Tony Hawk and move to the west coast with its seemingly endless supply of empty pools and backyard half pipes.  My all time favorite skate film is 1987’s The Search For Animal Chin.  It took the Bones Brigade crew through Hawaii and all over the west coast looking for the elusive Won Ton “Animal” Chin.  Still today, this is one of the best skate films of all time and a must for your collection.

 

 Stacy Peralta has brought the Bones Brigade crew back together for a documentary The Bones Brigade: An Autobiography that premiered at Sundance and will be touring through the UK in June, and should be on DVD/Blu Ray sometime soon.  It follows the history of the crew, where they are now and is full of great archival footage.  Be sure to check out The Search for Animal Chin and The Bones Brigade: An Autobiography then break out your board and enjoy the summer!

 

 

Pacific Northwest Trip

A much-needed vacation for me was long overdue, so I decided to venture off to the Northwest to explore Seattle, Portland and Olympic National Park.  This was my first trip to that part of the country and I was really amazed by the natural beauty in the Northwest, the great cities and everything they had to offer (especially the shopping and food!).  Here is a little taste of what there is to see, do and eat if you have the chance to make it out that way.

 

    

    

    

 With the weather so varied and unpredictable in that part of the country I needed something that I could use in the mountains, the city and for hiking along the rugged coastline.  Luckily I picked up an Adam Kimmel x Carhartt hoodie from Aloha Rag earlier this year that was the perfect choice to keep me comfortable throughout the trip.

 

Zip up hoodies are a great item to have since they are comfortable and easy to wear with almost anything you have on.  Take a look at some of my favorites that we currently have at Aloha Rag.

ARNY 4th Anniversary!!

                            

Thursday April 12th marks the 4th anniversary of Tatsugo Yoda bringing Aloha Rag from Hawaii all the way to New York City.  Since we have arrived in New York our team has grown so much, we have worked on collaborations with other designers and we launched the AR line for women and men.

 

The ARNY store has evolved over the past 4 years by bringing in new designers and showcasing amazing pieces and styles selected by Mr. Yoda and our buying team.  We enjoy being in an environment with such a dynamic and creative staff and it makes the store such a great place to work in and shop in.  To our clients and friends, whether you have just found out about us or you have been with us all four years we Thank You and look forward to the next 4 years with you and beyond.

Lanvin Homme

The Spring 2012 men's Lanvin collection is one of our favorites at Aloha Rag.  The use

of mixed fabrics and subtle details blend so well together and create unique but classic

menswear pieces.  Being able to dress the pieces up or down really gives men the 

versatility when wearing Lanvin, and you will always look great casual, dressed up or a

Junya Watanabe MAN x Tricker's

While Junya Watanabe and Tricker's have been collaborating for some time, this

season they have created one of their best to date with the two tone country brogue.

Available in calf skin brown leather with contrasting beige or olive cotton canvas, these are 

brogues with a slight twist that will remain a staple in your shoe closet for many years

Hyoni TV at ARNY: Behind the Scenes

This weekend Aloha Rag welcomed Hyoni Kang and Andrew Gordon to the New York store while shooting a segment for Hyoni’s reality show. If she looks familiar, its because you have probablly seen Hyoni in the runway shows of your favorite designers or featured in their campaigns. Hyoni TV follows the model as she frequents some of the best spots for fashion, food and fun in NYC, and this particular segment will air in Korea this May.  They had a great time shooting at the store and put some great looks together with AR, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang and Martin Margiela. Here are a few behind the scenes shots we took, and we promise to post a link to the show when it airs in May.  A big thanks to Hyoni, Andrew, Joanna and the crew for spending the day shooting at the store.

 

   

   

Glowing Man

 

London based surrealist photographer Jacob Sutton who has done work for Comme des Garcons, Y-3 and others has released an incredible moving image piece.  The video below is what happens when art and sports are combined (plus, a full body L.E.D. suit) and the results are amazing. Enjoy.

Home for the Holidays

It’s hard to believe that Christmas and the Holidays are almost here.  The ARNY staff is looking forward to getting away for the holidays after a busy December in the store and this year we are travelling all over the country.  Our destinations are as far as Hawaii and Miami and close by in Pennsylvania, Upstate NY and here in the city.  No matter where we are going, friends and family await and a time to relax and re-energize for the New Year.

 

Luckily the AR Spring Summer collection just arrived and we have great pieces to keep us looking good no matter where we go and what kind of weather will greet us.  Soft, luxurious cashmere for those chilly winter nights to shorts, skirts and tops for those of us that are lucky enough to escape the New York winter.   Come by the store and you can find the perfect something for that holiday party, the beach or just relaxing with friends by the fire…

New Thomas Wylde in store!

The above video is from the new book 10 Times Rosie celebrating the 1st 10 collections of Thomas Wylde.  The absolutely stunning Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is featured taking on ten different personas creating a gorgeous collection of images.

 

I have been a big fan of Thomas Wylde since the first collection and have her first book Death Valley which is another book full of amazing images.  The collections always have a bit of rock and roll style but with a feminine touch.  Ms. Thomas knows how to make her pieces stand out, without being too over the top.

Leather Riding Jackets

 

I came across this great short film from Matt Machine, an architect turned bike builder of custom vintage motorcycles that he hand builds in his shop in New South Wales, Australia.  The scenery and photography are quite stunning, and the perfect backdrop for his bikes. 

This season at Aloha Rag we have a great selection of leather riding jackets and other pieces that drew their inspiration from the era when these motorcycles were first ridden many years ago. Enjoy.

Music is an inseparable element with fashion, and we here at Aloha Rag always keep our eyes out for not only the newest in fashion, but also for current music. These three songs are playing in heavy rotation in the N.Y Store right now...!

 

 

Aloha Rag NY featured on Wetpaint

Stylist Lindsay Brook Cohen stopped in to do a her fun segment for Wetpaint called "Style Like a Star" where she gives us advice on how to recreate the looks and styles of our favorite television stars. While here Lindsay featured some beautiful pieces that we have on the floor that are perfect additions to a fall wardrobe.  The Current Elliot Game Shirt  is a beautifully muted pink and can be dressed up or down as Lindsay points out. Also, featured was the Pleated Black Mini Skirt by Alexander Wang, the detailing is something that makes this skirt stand out from the average pleated mini skirt.  

Last but not least the footwear, I'm very excited that we have the featured Martin Margiela Reverse Curve Wedge Bootie featured in the first photo in this post, this is my favorite shoe on the floor it's detailing is so fun and yet simple too.   Also, the Martin Margiela Short Bootie Brown is an obvious excellent choice for pairing with neutrals that are a popular trend this season.
